Redfish
are considered the bread and butter of the bays and range from Massachusets
down the Atlantic coast, througout the Gulf Coast all the way down
to Tuxpan, Mexcio.
The redfish or red drum (Sciaenops
ocellatus) is a member of the drum family. The trademark "eyespot"
located on the caudal peduncle is an evolutionary adaptation to
confuse predators and to where the head is actually located (an
attack on the tail would be non-fatal).
While subadults comprise the bay population,
offshore adults can reach impreassive sizes. The world record red
drum was caught off the coast of North Carolina and weighed in at
94 lbs.
It is also speculated that red drum
may live to be as much as 60 years old. The oldest redfish on record
was 56. Let Andy take you sight-casting for some of these beautiful
flats fish.
